Mell Monroe has been the Proprietor/Innkeeper of the Welcome Inn Manor bed and breakfast located in Bronzeville for the past four years, where he hosts over 200 guests each year from around the world achieving an average of 4.7 out of 5.0 Stars rating in one of the most economically challenged neighborhood in Chicago. His inn ranks in the top 5 out of 20 other businesses of its kind in the tourism market. Mell also created and narrated numerous historic African American tours on the Southside of Chicago over the past ten years and has recently launched a new group tour in 2016- “Discover the Unique Hidden Treasures & Untold History of Chicago’s Authentic South Side”- Featuring: Architectural Institutions, Music Legends, Cultural Migration, Artistic Expression and Southern Style Cuisines".
He was formerly SVP with Coffou Partners, executive search consultants, and has 15 years prior experience as an entrepreneur in the human resource and recruitment business. Mell earned a partnership role with Execu Search, the largest African American search franchise in the country. In 1993, Mell became the Principal-owner of the Chicago and Silicon Valley branch offices where his branch office recruited, coached and assisted in hiring over 200 under-represented groups in customer interfacing roles at Lotus Development/IBM, Sun Microsystems, Oracle Corporation, Apple Computer, Cisco Systems, Microsoft, Carlson Technologies, SBC Ameritech and Tata Consulting Services. Mell’s corporate experience over the previous ten years includes Regional Sales Manager, Business Development and Marketing Development Managers with General Electric, Mobil Chemical, Johnson & Johnson and Coca Cola.
He is the President of the Bronzeville Area Residents and Commerce Council where he created the Annual Historic Bronzeville Bike Tour, Historic House Tours and led the charge to challenge bad liquor stores and related nuisances effecting crime on the Near South Side. Mell is the Past President/Founder of the Greater South Loop Association. In 2007, Mell ran for Alderman of the 3rd Ward and helped to unseat Dorothy Tillman to make room for progressive leadership in his neighborhood. Throughout his career, Mell has been a committed leader to volunteer in the Chicago community including Real Men Cook Charities, Real Men Cook with Kids, the National Fatherhood Initiative, Conservators of African Art and the Chicago Black Press
Mell holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing from Rider University and is a native of New Jersey.
